The Technology Behind Auto-dimming Rearview Mirrors

Many a driver has had the unpleasant experience of a vehicle approaching from the rear or passing on the side equipped with bright headlights. The effect is often temporarily blinding and potentially hazardous. However, vehicles equipped with rearview mirrors that dim automatically prevent the problem. Stop by our East Swanzey, NH Volvo sales facility and inspect the vehicles possessing the auto-dimming mirror capability. Ask about a test drive.

The technology involved in making auto-dimming mirrors was introduced in the 1980s. Since that time, the auto-dimming effect has been incorporated into more vehicles each year.

The specially-designed mirrors contain dual sensors that act as cameras or photodetectors. The sensors are joined by a microprocessor. When the combination detects headlight glare, a signal travels to electrochromatic gel. The gel undergoes an oxidation process that causes it to darken. The gel is sandwiched between two glass layers that make up the mirror, which also restricts the amount of light reflected from behind.
